Can I start online and/or distance learning anytime?

Class sessions begin five times each year: August, October, January, and March, and May. Students may start at the beginning of any session.

How long are the online courses?

All courses run in consecutive six-week sessions.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled according to our course withdrawal policy:

•Full refund prior to beginning of course minus $15.00 processing fee
•During first week of course (Monday through Saturday), $135.00 refund (75 percent)
•During second week of course (Sunday through Saturday), $90.00 refund (50 percent)
•During third week of course (Sunday through Saturday), $45.00 refund (25 percent)
•No withdrawal refunds after third week of a course

How much do online courses cost?

Each course is $180 USD. This includes all required reading material for the six-week course. Materials are provided in the course as PDF (Portable Document Format) documents and other online resources.

What technology do I need for online distance learning education?

Software and hardware requirements are available on our website. Simply click here to go to the Software and Hardware Requirements page.

Is online education right for me?

If the majority of the following statements are true of you, then you are a good candidate for online education:

1. I am fairly comfortable using a computer and the Internet.
2. I have access to a computer with an Internet connection.
3. I am self-motivated and can set my own goals.
4. I am conscientious of my time and can plan ahead.
5. I like interacting with those who are different from me.
6. I am comfortable expressing myself in writing.
7. I enjoy reading and researching new things.
8. I can devote approximately five to seven hours a week to online education.
9. I enjoy critical thinking and healthy debate.

Can I take only one or two courses at a time?

The majority of IJS students have full-time jobs and families and therefore take one course per session. Students whose responsibilities allow may take more than one course at a time.

Will I need to be online at specific times?

Courses are designed to be asynchronous, which means that there are no set times when all students must be online together. Students are free to access materials and participate in the course any time of the day or night. However, there are specific due dates and participation requirements for assignments as outlined in each syllabus. Interactive questions are posted each week to provide focus for the discussion. Students must post an initial response to two of the discussion questions no later than Monday at midnight and interact with other students and the professor a minimum of once a day for three days prior to Saturday at midnight. All of the reading for the week must be completed before posting in the discussion.

Will I need to buy course materials?

All reading material is provided online and is available each week during the six-week course. No additional materials need to be purchased.

Does it matter what courses I take?

We want students to be able take the courses that are the most relevant to their interests, life and ministry. No courses are prerequisites for other courses, so students are free to enroll in the course of their choosing.

When does enrollment for courses begin?

Enrollment for courses begins two weeks before the start of the scheduled session.

Are online courses self-paced or are there due dates?

Courses are designed to be completed in a six-week format. Students are responsible for managing their own participation and assignments to meet required course deadlines.

How much time do online courses take?

Students should plan for 30 to 45 minutes of online time at least five days a week, as well as the time necessary to complete required reading. Total time required to complete coursework varies according to the individual, but the average time commitment for the courses is five to seven hours a week.

As an online student, will I be interacting with others?

Yes. Online courses are heavily interactive. You will be communicating with your teacher and participating in discussion forums with your classmates. This is an exciting opportunity to build relationships with classmates from around the country and the world.

Can I audit an online course?

Not at this time. The majority of the learning takes place while answering the weekly discussion questions and interacting with your classmates.

Is IJS accredited?

No. We have built our courses at an accredited level but at this time we are not recognized by an accreditation agency.

Are there scholarships available?

At this time we do not have scholarships available. We have tried to keep the course fees comparable to other schools at our level. All reading material is online and is included in the $180 USD course fee.
