Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he would consider mediating between Russia and Ukraine if the two nations and the U.S. asked him. Such an opportunity would have to come at the “right time and the right circumstances,” he said. In an interview with CNN, Netanyahu said he had received an unofficial request to mediate between the two early in Russia’s invasion, but he turned the offer down because he was not prime minister then.
It would be quite an honor for Netanyahu and Israel to be the peacemakers to end this deadly conflict. Israel has a unique position, as it holds relations with both nations; so it may be best suited to find an end to the conflict. But this is easier said than done. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last year, but the talks did not result in peace. Now, almost a year since Russia invaded Ukraine, it’s past time for the bloodshed to end; and hopefully Israel will be the country to make it happen.
